Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam — an obligatory annual charity of 2.5% on qualifying wealth that has been held for a full lunar year, given to those eligible to receive it. It purifies wealth and supports the community.
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must hold before zakat is due. It is set at the value of 85g of gold or 595g of silver. If your net zakatable wealth is below the nisab, no zakat is due. Many scholars recommend using the silver nisab as it benefits more recipients.
Zakat is due on cash and bank balances, gold and silver, money owed to you that you expect back, business merchandise, and investments/shares held for trade. You can subtract immediate debts. Your home, car and personal belongings are exempt.
It’s a helpful estimate for the common case. For complex situations (business assets, agricultural produce, livestock, pensions), consult a qualified scholar or a trusted zakat organisation.
